Centre for Biotechnology at Warsaw University of Technology was established by the Rector of the University on 25th June 2002. The Centre is a joint venture of three Faculties: Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering. Its aim is to organize and co-ordinate education, research and other scientific activities in the field of biotechnology.
The courses in Biotechnology started at WUT in 1989 when the Interfaculty Biotechnology Program was established. The Program was run in three faculties: Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Faculty of Chemistry. Students of these faculties studied together during 6 semesters. After this basic course students chose one of the graduate courses: Industrial Biotechnology (at Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering), Biotechnology in Environmental Engineering (at Faculty of Environmental Engineering) and Technology of Fine Chemicals at Faculty of Chemistry.
The Centre for Biotechnology continues and develops the good experience in biotechnology education at WUT. A new program of study has been introduced to meet all governmental standards of biotechnology education. The basic course covers first three years of the study. It offers balanced education in basic, biological and technical sciences. The basic lectures cover mathematics, physics, computer science and chemistry. Biological lectures include cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and gene engineering. The technical education is ensured by fluid mechanics, bioprocess engineering, process equipment and biochemical technology. There are three graduate courses: Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Biotechnology of Enzymes and Cosmetics. The Center has got a quality certificate by University Accreditation Commission in 2004.
